I can confidentially say she is over 18! Mostly like she's in the 25-33 range prior to the irradiated dreaming god period.

History: link!

Division: Research and Archives! Ariane's isolated upbringing from Eusan society up until her teen years gave Ariane access to many things Eusan considered unnecessary and wasteful; primarily art, music, and literature. Even when faced with the displeasure of the nation, Ariane refused to stop seeking out banned media and even smuggled them onto the Penrose with her. She's curious and open-minded, and she'd want to be involved in recording all their new discoveries-- something she foolishly believed she'd be able to do on the Penrose mission.

Edict: The Empty Machine. Ariane literally became an irradiated dreaming god because she longed so fiercely for Elster and their promise as she lay undying in her cryopod. The loop she and Elster are trapped in is just as much of Ariane's making as it is Elster's, because her desire to be with Elster again and fulfill their promise combined with her bioresonant abilities to infect all of reality.

Presented with a world of repression and collectivism, Ariane hungered for more: Self-expression through her art, knowledge through banned books. She wanted more than Eusan society could give, and it drove her to the stars.

Powers: So Ariane is "bioresonant". What is that?

No one is really sure. Bioresonance is a plot device, speaking frankly. It's described as a connection, a universal vibration, and a song all dance to but only a few can hear. The easiest way to sum it up would be a psychic ability that does what it needs, and not even Eusan nation is using it without a proper understanding of what it is. It's best described as an ability within some to influence reality and the world around them, knowingly or unknowingly. Some Replikas can use it to read minds. It's also used, somehow, to imprint the neural blueprint of a deceased Gestalt onto a Replika.

Ariane does not appear to have been aware of her bioresonance despite her ability being strong enough a spy had to flee lest they be discovered because of her. Unfortunately, Signalis is vague on how that would happen.

She seems to be able to alter reality (inflicting her radiation sickness on living beings, warping locations and space time, potentially creating fake people), communicate telepathically (WAKE UP 5000 hours unskippable), and just generally be a dreaming god slowly driving reality to the brink because she really needs her wife to end her suffering.

Ariane does not have any conscious control of her abilities.

As the Ascendants deemed your character worthy of being on this exploration voyage, what qualities did they observe in your character that they found appropriate for the mission?

First and foremost, Ariane was chosen for this mission because she is already skilled in and prepared for this type of mission by virtue of being a Scout Officer aboard the Penrose 512. While she went on the mission as a way to escape her life in Eusan, Ariane already studied things like radio operations, ship upkeep, and exploration of space both as a work requirement of the Eusan Nation as well as learning them second-hand through Elster. She's intelligent and curious, and with nothing else to do on a ship flying through the vastness of space...

She has the skills and know-how that the Wayfarers will need for a successful mission. Furthermore, she's also already adjusted to life in space, so she can be a reliable fallback for other Wayfarers who are newer to the experience. Ariane struggled greatly with the isolation and being surrounded by the same everything for nearly a decade and beyond. As shown when she taught Elster to dance, Ariane is willing and able to teach others if they want to learn from her. It would work as a good bonding point for her as well, given she historically has trouble making friends.

Additionally, Ariane is suited for this mission because she has an innate appreciation for the world outside of what she knows. Despite it being severely frowned upon and borderline forbidden for Gestalts, Ariane defied Eusan to listen to music, paint art, and read banned books. There's a thirst for knowledge in her that Eusan could not stomp out despite the best attempts of everyone around her. She wants to learn more about the world around her, and find other worlds out of a genuine curiosity and desire for something better.

As part of the Research and Division team, she can be trusted to be peaceful, reliable, and professional.

What is your character's best quality, what is their worst, and how do these two qualities affect each other?

Ariane's best quality is her love of the arts and the feelings they inspire in her. Among a repressed society where individual expression is shunned, Ariane keeps alive the tradition of what debatably makes us the most human. She's a lover of painting, of books she's not supposed to be reading. She has a thirst for knowledge that, when indulged, makes her open and receptive to the people around her. She befriends Elster despite her desire to be alone, and bonds with her by sharing the things she loves. She teaches Elster to dance, shows her music and movies, and paints for her.

Ariane's worst quality is one not immediately noticeable: She's passive to the point of simply seeking escape from her reality. It's not something immediately noticeable when you look at the things she's done, like defying Eusan or deciding to go into space. To someone just giving her and her life a glance, it would appear that she has no issues asserting herself or pursuing what she wants. But it crops up repeatedly that Ariane doesn't fight back, simply withdraws and endures. When she is ganged up on at her school in Rotfront by three unidentified girls, Ariane makes no effort to fight back or defend herself. Instead, she is shoved to the floor and simply curls up defensively and cries as she is kicked. The attack is only stopped by one of the Itou sisters interfering.

Though Ariane defies Eusan's desire regarding art and media, she never gives any indication that it's something she has actively fought back against rather than just...keeps doing. She does it because she has nothing else, no friends (outside of the Itou twins, and it's implied at least one of them dies) and it's implied this bullying is a frequent experience. Ariane escapes the world through her art, she finds companionship in books and joy in music. Ariane doesn't fit in because she can't change into what the regime wants her to be, and so she simply does what's demanded of her and stays quiet.

This all ends up dooming her just as much as ignoring the warnings given about being unable to survive past cycle 3000. Once Signalis itself begins, Ariane is the one calling for Elster to kill her, but she doesn't seem to have pushed for it before that. At least, not enough to convince Elster. Her letters lament how she doesn't want to die or live, she just wants to sleep. She chooses to endure as she always has, desperately grasping for one more day of happiness with Elster.

From this, her creativity becomes an unintentional weapon against all of reality. Her dreaming mind escapes the pain of undying radiation poisoning by creating the time loops and the stories that happen within them. It's implied that characters who appear out of time, like Alina, are Ariane's dreaming mind writing her a different story, one where she didn't board the Penrose. Elster may be part of reality breaking down by keeping the time-loops going, but Ariane is the one who has unintentionally trapped everyone and spreads her pain to everyone. With the amount of literature and art she has to go on, her dreams are too complex and symbolic to make much sense of.

Your character's Edict appears in front of them, and agrees to grant them one wish: what does your character wish for?

Ariane wishes to be together with Elster, happy and free.

It wouldn't even matter where they were supposed to go after, whether they stayed with the Theorem or went to some new world. With this wish, she'd be okay with not dying and laying down her endless requests for it, as long as she could have what she truly wants: To be with Elster, in happiness, just living their lives. After all, the letters we find from Ariane make it clear that it's not that she actually wants to die. It's that, under the effects of radiation and watching Elster slowly break down in the failing Penrose... Ariane reached a point where she could not endure the suffering any longer.

All Ariane has wanted is to live free. Being forced to move from Leng with her mother to Rotfront and Eusan society as a whole was incredibly difficult for Ariane, and she crumbled internally over the weight of it. Meeting Elster, she began to dream that they were running away from everyone else together. Before everything went wrong post-cycle 3000, just being with Elster was more than she could hope for. But the truth of their mission ripped that away from her.

But this wish would also require that Elster was properly restored to her original normal as well, and if possible, extending her life past her frame's original life cycle. Ariane wants to spend as long with Elster as they can get. If this was something that couldn't be done or guaranteed, whether because it's too difficult or because it's considered more than one wish, Ariane would instead wish to dance with her one last time and then be allowed to die with her.

The Theorem has broken down, and is drifting toward a black hole. There is very little hope of outside rescue. What does your character do?

Ariane would initially attempt to assist with getting the Theorem back on its proper course in any way that she was able, whether alongside Elster or anyone else who is available. She would leverage her experience on the Penrose to assist with repairs, but she would be especially helpful using her radio operations skills for signaling for help. She would do so no matter how fruitless, for as long as she reasonably could.

However, when it became clear that there was nothing that could be done to stop it and no one is responding, she would take time to try and comfort the other Wayfarers who are afraid. Ariane's experience with the dying Penrose meant she had to face the inevitability of death staring her in the face for years as her body deteriorated. Though she may have continued to fight through it for Elster's sake, Ariane knew full well it was temporary once the real side effects of the radiation began to set in. This is why she made the promise with Elster, because she is able to accept that death is coming no matter what, and what matters is the time spent together until it comes.

With no other options left, Ariane would try to leverage her experience to bring peace to others around her as best she could, whether through talking or distracting them.

Right before the end, however, she would return to Elster's side, and greet the end dancing in her arms like she always wanted.

Writing Samples: with Eslter, with A2.

comments
